Description:

US CIVIL WAR Antique Prussian Model 1809 Musket

Made in Neisse in 1840 & Sold to Union circa 1861

Here we present an antique Prussian Model 1809 Smooth Bore Percussion Musket, made in 1840 at the Prussian armory at Neisse. The Model 1809 was originally made in the flintlock format, with later production shifting to the more modern and reliable percussion firing system. This musket would have been used in Prussian conflicts during the 1840s and 50s, including the Egyptian-Ottoman War, the Greater Poland Uprising, the Revolutions of 1848, and the First Schleswig War, before being sold to the United States government in the first years of the American Civil War. Though thoroughly obsolete, both the Union and the Confederacy were desperate for small arms as the South had little capability to make their own and the North had to scramble to ramp up their own production.

This example features unit markings on the bottom of the butt plate “39 D/6” and the date of manufacture “1840”. The lock is marked “Crown/Neisse/1840”. At some point in this gun’s history, someone removed the forward portion of fore stock, either in an attempt to lighten or repurpose the gun or even remove a damaged portion. They also took the liberty to install an interesting little patch box with the image of a hunting dog.

The overall condition is fair. The metal surfaces are lightly pitted all over, with a dark brown patina. The stock has a crack around the wrist, but is solid and stable overall. The bore is smooth and untouched. The action is strong.
