RARE Marston THREE Shot Deringer .32 Rimfire Pistol

UNIQUE 1860s Triple Bbl Superposed Defense Pistol

Here we present an antique Wm. W. Marston Three-Barrel .32 Deringer Pistol, made circa 1866 in New York City, New York. Designed and patented by William Marston in 1857, this 3-shot pistol was one of only a few repeating cartridge pistols during this time. Smith & Wesson bought the Rollin White Patent rights in the same year, which gave them exclusivity over the completely bored through revolver cylinder needed to use metallic cartridges most effectively. The Sharps pepperbox was another unique design that was very successful during the period before S&W’s patent expired. Like Sharps, Marston utilized multiple barrels that were superposed to make a barrel cluster, as well as an oscillating firing pin to hit each cartridge in succession. The barrel cluster hinges down for loading and unloading, using a very simple fixed claw system for extraction. There was a chamber indicator on the right side of the gun that enabled the shooter to set the firing pin to the first barrel, and let the shooter know which barrel it was on if they fired it. The firing pin would simply travel to the next barrel. With a firearm this unique, ingenious and rare, it is no wonder why collectors love them.

The left side of the frame is marked “WM. W. MARSTON/PATENTED MAY 26, 1857/NEW YORK CITY/IMPROVED 1864”. The overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces are dark with age. The markings are clear and legible. Serial numbers match. The bores are well-rifled and clean, with slight pitting. The action functions, though the firing pin is absent.
