A Great Advertising Phrase: “Go To Freemans / -- For -- / Fine Whiskies & Wines / Hot Springs / Ark”.
A VERY EARLY 1880’s ONE-GALLON jug. This beehive-shaped brown jug measures 10” to the top, and has a 7-1/4” diameter base. It in almost perfect condition, with very distinct white scratch lettering on a dark chocolate-brown glazed jug. There are three shallow, tiny chips on the front side of the top, all being dark from age, as expected on any early jug. Any other light spots noticed on the top or handle were glazed over, and left the pottery that way.
The glaze is so bright and shiny that making good pictures with minimal glare-reflection proved to be difficult. I finally had to resort to a white tent for the most diffuse lighting (least reflection). See highly detailed pictures, but keep in mind that the brown color is darker and more even than the pictures indicate.
Hot Springs was a popular hangout for the Oklahoma Outlaws and other Well-Known Gunmen, as gambling establishments were plentiful in this city.
Visitors to this city read like a Who’s Who. Frank and Jesse James, Cole, John, and Bob Younger, robbed a stagecoach five miles outside of Hot Springs in 1874. Bat Masterson visited Hot Springs many times starting in 1878, and a 1901 newspaper reported that he was a “full-fledged citizen” of the town. Masterson loved the plush gambling clubs like the Ohio, Kentucky, and Arkansaw, once winning $10,000 in a five-hour faro game. Wyatt Earp had Hot Springs connections. Deputy U.S. Marshall Paden Tolbert spent his last days in Hot Springs in 1904. Detective William Pinkerton was seen in Hot Springs. Texas cattleman and gunman George Littlefield frequented Hot Springs. Many famous boxing champions “vacationed” in Hot Springs, including John L. Sullivan and Jim Corbett.
Born in 1857, John W. Freeman was a Hot Springs saloonist at least from 1894-1910. He is listed as “Saloon” at Hot Springs in the April 1894 Bradstreet. The 1903 city directory indicates that Three Freeman Saloons were being operated simultaneously, one at 110 Ouachita Avenue (Freeman’s Barrel House & Saloon), at 700 Central Avenue (Freeman’s Plateau Saloon), and a larger location at 650-54 Central Avenue (Freeman’s Wellington Saloon & Barrel House). The term “Barrel House” refers to the Kegs of Whiskey. According to the Hot Springs library, Mr. Freeman was appointed Deputy Sheriff there in 1889, and “was a colorful character in Garland county”. John W. Freeman died there April 9, 1910 at the age of 52.
This jug was not dug, but was an attic discovery. No Cracks, No Repairs, an Extremely Nice Arkansas Whiskey Jug!!
