Description:
***   SOLD   ***   Cogswell & Harrison 'The Avant Tout' 20 Bore Boxlock Ejector with 28" Barrels   This 20 gauge double, made in 1907, is a nicely finished and specified example of the famous Cogswell & Harrison version of the Anson & Deeley boxlock that had become such a hugely successful design by the turn of the 19th Century. Recently refurbished by Toby Barclay of Heritage Guns UK. This very pretty smallbore, number 42126, was TIG sleeved in 2001 and nitro proofed for 2-3/4” cartridges. As is often the case with Cogswell & Harrison guns, a very attractive piece of walnut was used in the stocking and with our careful refinishing, the colors, figure and grain have really come to the fore.
With such good wall, bore, choke and stock measurements, this delightful gun would make an excellent companion for upland bird hunting, clay targets and quail.   ***   The action is of Anson & Deeley design and features: double triggers bolted by an automatic top tang, safety slide; top lever opening, operating a 'Purdey Bolt' by way of a Scott Spindle; three point bolting including Greener cross bolt extension; 'Avant Tout' patent ejector mechanism actuated by a rocking lever cocked by the movement of the main spring; 'Assisted Opening' when unfired; 'Hackett' style snap-on forend catch; and a removable hinge pin. Gun weighs 5lb 15oz.  Engraving style Border and Scroll, Signed action. Trigger pulls measure approximately: Front trigger 3 ½ lbs Rear trigger 4 ½ lbs.   ***   The TIG sleeved steel barrels are 28" in length, chambered for 2 ¾" (70mm) cartridges and are of brazed 'dovetail' lump construction with soft soldered ribs. Top rib is of sunken, concave type, often described as 'swamped'. London reproof for 70mm nitro powder cartridges in 2001. The right barrel is bored 0.611 with a constriction of 0.006 for improved cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.034. The left barrel is bored 0.611 and has a constriction of 0.015 for modified choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.034.   ***   The straight hand stock and splinter forend are crafted from well figured walnut. The stock is lightly cast off for a right-handed shot, is fitted with a vacant white metal oval and 7/8" Silver recoil pad. The stock has a filled knot in the LH side of its body and the forend features a nicely engraved tip.The 22 lines per inch checkering has been freshened to the normal boxlock design. The stock is finished with a traditional linseed oil based preparation as used on best guns by one of the top English makers. This finish uses no grain fillers to achieve its deep, smooth lustre, only many hours of alternate build and flatting off of the surface. Stock dimensions are 14-3/4” by 1-1/2” by 2-1/4” with cast off for right hand shot. A perfect smallbore for clays, quail, grouse or woodcock. US Agent for Heritage Guns UK.  ***   This is a modern firearm and I will need a copy of your dealer’s FFL. Buyer is responsible for all shipping, insurance and related charges. I give a three-day non-firing inspection and will only accept returns if gun is not as described.   ***   See this great gun and other fine doubles in the MacNab booth at The Vintage Gunners Cup at Hopkins Game Farm in Kennedyville, Maryland September 22 - 24, 2017.
