A very early, 1872 production .22 "high hammer" engraved Colt Open Top revolver, attributed to L.D. Nimschke, originally one of Colt's most famous Master Engravers. Serial numbered in the 3xxx range, this model was Colt's first metallic cartridge revolver made with entirely newly designed and manufactured parts. Because of the Rollen White patent on bored through cylinders, owned by Smith & Wesson, Colt was prohibited from marketing this new technology any earlier. Nimschke's work is characterized by his deep, floral intertwined scrolls, accented by his diagonal hash marks or chevrons, and his punch dot background. While little original finish remains on this gun, all of the engraving is very distinct and the original pearl grips are excellent. Beautiful little Colt revolver.
