Antique U.S. Springfield Model 1879 Trapdoor Rifle
Made from 1879-1885
Here we present an antique U.S. Springfield Model 1879 Trapdoor Rifle, made circa 1882 by Springfield Armory. Amazingly, despite the adoption of the ill-fated Model 1882 Chaffee-Reese Bolt Action Magazine Rifle, new models of trapdoor rifles continued to be produced and used all the way through the mid-1890s, until finally, the Krag-Jorgensen was adopted. The U.S. continued to see unrest and conflict with the displaced Native Americans during this time, including the Wounded Knee Massacre on December 29th, 1890. Trapdoors continued to see use all the way through the Spanish American War.
This specimen is marked “U.S./MODEL/1873” on the breech. The lock is marked “Eagle/U.S./Springfield”. The left side of the barrel bears the “V/P/Eagle head” proof marks. The left side of the stock bears the inspector cartouche of Samuel W. Porter. Behind the trigger guard tang is the “P” marking.
This specimen is a little rough, but serviceable. The iron parts are dark with age and markings are clear and legible. There are additional dovetails on the top of the barrel, possibly where an early optic was once mounted. The walnut stock has been shortened, and there are a couple repairs. The bore is rifled and shiny. The action is strong.
