Antique SPRINGFIELD U.S. M1816 “1827” Dated Musket
Civil War-era Conversion to Percussion
Here we present an antique U.S. Model 1816 3 Band Musket, made by Springfield Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts, circa 1827, then updated to percussion around the time of the American Civil War. The Model 1816 was the largest production of U.S. flintlock muskets, with an impressive run from 1816-1840. Both national armories, Springfield and Harpers Ferry, were involved as were about 16 different contractors. Conflicts during this period included numerous encounters with Native Americans, as well as the Mexican-American War.
The lock is marked with a federal eagle over “U.S.” The back of the lock is marked “SPRING/FIELD/1827”. The front of the trigger guard is marked “SD” and the rear of it “P”. There is the outline of an original inspector cartouche on the left side of the stock.
The overall condition of this musket is good. The iron surfaces are dark. The walnut stock is repaired just above the lock and has a stable sliver on the left side. The bore is smooth and in good condition. The action is strong.
