Description:
This knife is the real deal quite possibly made by James Black, the original bowie knife maker for James Bowie.
ownded by Bob Berryman and Bob Abels, original scabbard has red nail polish mark a common mark by Mr.Abels.
This knife has no micky moused features --totally original-14" blade only one known with blood fuller crudely cut-the age is commensurate with what you would want to see for its age-
I myself and Norm Flayderman believe it to be a james Black made Knife. Mr. Black made knives for 8 yrs 1830-1838 and must have made at least 1500 knives only a handful are known. Mr, Black believed in making knives for a specific purpose so a blood groove fits the bill-This knife has silver trim and pins as well as an escutcheon plate marked L.G. ROBERTS ESQ--in 3 different size letters and in a early font common in the period- most likely done by a jeweler.  The Roberts family was a large family in Texas in that period having migrated from Georgia. Black rec'd many orders for a knife like Jim Bowies--the style was copied by others as well--including a picture of James Black and a daggerotype of a confederate wearing this style and size knife -his was enlayed with shell i believe-the knife is 19" overall and is nearly identicle to bowie number 1 , in the arkansas museum--also the font on the escutcheon is the same--the knife is extremely light for its huge size and is highly likely to have been damascus by Mr. Black. I have been collecting for 50 years and can attest to the originality of this knife--please contact me with questions and more info as i could write a treatise on this knife alone--you may call me at 719-689-3007 as i am retired and home most of the time. i have other confederate items and rare firearms on this venue as well-
