Description:

BEAUTIFULLY ORNATE Antique Half Stock PLAINS Rifle

Quintessential Pioneer Rifle in .40 Caliber

Here we present an antique Half Stock Percussion Plains Rifle, made circa 1840.

The American Longrifle, more commonly, but less correctly, known as the 'Kentucky rifle', was described by Captain John G. W. Dillin in the dedication to his seminal 1924 book, The Kentucky Rifle:

“From a flat bar of soft iron, hand forged into a gun barrel; laboriously bored and rifled with crude tools; fitted with a stock hewn from a maple tree in the neighboring forest; and supplied with a lock hammered to shape on the anvil; an unknown smith, in a shop long since silent, fashioned a rifle which changed the whole course of world history; made possible the settlement of a continent; and ultimately freed our country of foreign domination.

Light in weight; graceful in line; economical in consumption of powder and lead; fatally precise; distinctly American; it sprang into immediate popularity; and for a hundred years was a model often slightly varied but never radically changed.”

This .40 caliber rifle features a beautiful decorative hardware, especially the brass patchbox on the tiger maple stock. This work most likely originated in Kentucky or Pennsylvania, though the only name on the gun is the “JOSH GOLCHER” lock. The profile of this rifle is nice and slender, though the barrel is of good weight. The triggers are double set for precision shooting. There are a couple other ornaments on the gun, including a silver eagle.

The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces have a uniformly dark patina, with a little salt and pepper throughout. The markings are legible. The tiger maple has very nice grain, and is the case with many of these beautiful works of art, the stock has been repaired at the wrist. The bore is sharp and clean. The action is strong. There is no half-cock notch and the rear trigger must be set to fire.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 39-1/4 inches in length.

Caliber: .40

Overall condition as seen in photos.
