RARE G.P. Foster Tiger Maple Percussion PLAINS Rifle

Beautiful & Interesting Rifle from Massachusetts

Here we present an antique G.P. Foster Percussion Plains Rifle, made circa 1850 by George Pratt Foster in Taunton, Massachusetts. Foster was a machinist and gunmaker at least as early as 1843. At this time, he was involved with several groundbreaking firearms designs, including the Klein’s Patent bolt action needle rifle, the Volcanic and Porter Turret Rifle. In the process, he would actually employ the likes of Horace Smith, Daniel Wesson and C.D. Schubarth. He would go on to work as foreman for the Bristol Fire Arms Company, as well as the Burnside Rifle Company during the American Civil War.

This rifle features a distinctive design. The mechanism is a boxlock with a side hammer, the enclosure for which seems very small and compact in comparison to this rifle’s single shot contemporaries. It has double set triggers for precision shots. The trigger guard doubles as a pistol grip. The frame is lightly engraved. The stock is a very handsome tiger stripe maple with a brass patchbox and butt plate. This rifle’s slim overall contours would have made it very nice to carry. It is both aesthetically distinct and simply elegant.

Overall condition is near fine. The metal parts are very dark with age. The markings are legible. The internals are all numbered “665”. The stock is fine. The bore is sharp and clean. The action is strong. The rear trigger must be set to hold cock and there is no half-cock. Here is a rare and unique rifle, made by a gunmaker who rubbed shoulders with some of the most famous names in firearms history!
