Description:
Serial #A40446, 11mm Gras, 32 1/2" barrel with a fine, bright bore that has a small amount of freckling within the grooves. This is an 1875 dated rifle that has had the 1880 gas escape groove added to the receiver and retains about 80% of an armory re-applied blue finish that has left the markings and corners still crisp and sharp and exhibits a small amount of pitting towards the rear of the receiver around the guide screw. There is silvering and fading along the projections and bearing surfaces, mostly at the muzzle, while a dull gray patina with even brown freckling is present on the triggerguard and mixed number bolt. The mechanism is somewhat tight but fully functional and the walnut stock, numbered to a different gun on the right side of the butt, has numerous small handling marks and surface blemishes under the added varnish, and also has some small chips missing from the right side of the forend around and above the nosecap retention spring. There is no cleaning rod but the rifle is still a very good plus example of a French Gras. Antique
