COLLECTORS – If you collect the key shotguns in the evolution of the double barrel, this is not just a key type; this is one of the original keys. W.& C. Scott developed the Scott spindle which is the method used by EVERY top-lever opening shotgun today, side by side and/or over and under. And their hammer gun was the first shotgun in which W.& C.Scott employed the new innovation, this one. This exact gun is shown on YouTube, Special Guns with Roger Rule, Episode 6. A history of MAJOR evolutionary double guns for the self-contained modern cartridge would look like this:
1. SXS, Hammer Gun, Nearly any brand, backaction with Jones Underlever – Boss would be a best example.
2. SXS, Hammer Gun, W.& C.Scott bar action with Scott spindle top lever – W.C.Scott is the first example.
3. SXS, Hammerless, Sidelock,ejector – early 1880s, Purdey’s Beesley perfected in 1884.
4. SXS, Hammerless, Boxlock ejector – Anson & Deeley of Westley Richards, perfected 1882 (intercepting sear)
5. SXS, Hammerless, Round action trigger plate – Dickson perfected 1882
6. SXS, Hammerless, Droplock action – Deeley & Taylor of Westley Richards, 1897 perfected 1907
7. O/U, Hammerless, Sidelock action – Boss 1909 (Key elements used by Beretta in their SO series)
8. O/U, Hammerless, Boxlock action – Browning Superposed 1926, débuted 1932
9. O/U, Hammerless, Boxlock action trigger plate – Perazzi 1957 perfected 1964.
The subject gun here is an original example of #2 in the above evolutionary outline, completed late in 1887 at 10 Gt Castle Street, Regent Circus, London. All of the guns after this type, and all top opening guns made today, use the Scott spindle (side lever opening guns were an exception that came and went, and did not last in the evolutionary decent).
If you are not familiar with Scott, Geoffrey Boothroyd in his fine book, Sidelocks & Boxlocks, writes:
“…it is no exaggeration that Scott could lay claim to being the best known British shotgun manufacturer…This was not based simply on volume of output, considerable though this was, but on the practical contribution to gunmaking and the high standard of the guns made…”
[and later]
“…the quality of workmanship and materials was of the highest”
This gun has double triggers, a straight-hand English grip, a splinter forearm with an A&D release (one of the earliest of this period), a smooth concave rib, casehardened receiver, fine scroll & rosette engraving, a checkered butt, and a gold oval for the owner’s initials.
It has been professionally restored to function with modern ammunition bringing it into the 21st Century. To shoot nitro ammo, the barrels were professionally sleeved with modern steel barrels with 2 3/4" chambers, then proofed to 3 1/4 Ton, and fitted with the extra Briley 28 gauge tube set. The 12 bores are choked: right .005; left .015.
The gun has been restocked with new strong wood and while the stockmaker was at it, used AAAA fancy English Walnut, with modern dimensions of 14 5/8” x 1 ¼” x 2”; Weight 7 lbs 5oz. Condition would be “Excellent, original as professionally restored.” Besides holding this valuable place in the evolution of the double shotgun, this gun is a great modernized hammergun ready to use in Vintagers type competition and comes in original maker’s case. EXC. Condition as restored. Price $7,450.00
