CIVIL WAR Antique US SPRINGFIELD 1861 “Carbine”
Modified Rifle to Carbine for Use on a Horse Dated 1864
Here we present an antique U.S. Model 1861 Rifle-Musket, made in 1864 at Springfield Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts. This rifle has been modified from its full-length configuration to that of a carbine. The barrel and stock have been cut down significantly, and the barrel bored smooth. An iron nose cap and ramrod tube were installed. The rear sight was removed, and a notch installed in the back and a blade in the front. An extra-long barrel tang has also been utilized. Finally, a sling ring was installed on the front of the trigger guard. Was this a Confederate capture that was later modified to this configuration? Such guns were known to have been used in the hands of Confederate cavalry due to shortages of weapons.
This .58 caliber rifle’s lock is marked “1864” and “U.S./SPRINGFIELD”. Two government inspector cartouches are visible on the left side of the rifle. Federal proof marks are located on the left side of the barrel.
The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces have a dark patina, including where all modifications were made, letting us know that these were done long ago. The markings are legible. The stock is in good shape. The bore is smooth. The action is functional, though there is no half-cock.
