Description:

“KILDEER” Antique Louisville Kentucky Long Rifle

Last of the Mohicans Reference Maker Marked Rifle

Here we present an antique Half Stock Percussion Rifle, made circa 1840.

The American Longrifle, more commonly, but less correctly, known as the 'Kentucky rifle', was described by Captain John G. W. Dillin in the dedication to his seminal 1924 book, The Kentucky Rifle:

“From a flat bar of soft iron, hand forged into a gun barrel; laboriously bored and rifled with crude tools; fitted with a stock hewn from a maple tree in the neighboring forest; and supplied with a lock hammered to shape on the anvil; an unknown smith, in a shop long since silent, fashioned a rifle which changed the whole course of world history; made possible the settlement of a continent; and ultimately freed our country of foreign domination.

Light in weight; graceful in line; economical in consumption of powder and lead; fatally precise; distinctly American; it sprang into immediate popularity; and for a hundred years was a model often slightly varied but never radically changed.”

This .34 caliber rifle features a “NETHERLAND & HART/KIL(TWO DEER)/LOUISVILLE KY.” marked barrel. The reference to “KILDEER” was undoubtedly a motif connected to James Fenimore Cooper’s historical fiction novel The Last of the Mohicans, published in 1826. In the story, the protagonist, Hawkeye, owns a rifle which he calls Killdeer. The lock appears to be a Golcher. This rifle also features a double set trigger and a long octagonal barrel for precision shooting.

The overall condition is very good. The metal parts are dark with age. The markings on the barrel are still quite legible. The stock is in good condition, with a small crack off the lock screw on the left side of the gun. The bore is well-rifled and in very good condition. The action is functional, with no half-cock notch. The lock could use adjustment or repair to prevent its current tendency to be pushed or jarred out of cock.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 40-1/2 inches in length.

Caliber: .34
