Description:
Rare Winchester Model 1876 rifle with factory Open Top configuration (no provision for dust cover). Few made and very few have survived. Standard configuration of 28" full octagon barrel, full magazine and crescent butt with trap door buttplate. Basically a gray gun with traces of original finish turned patina on barrel and about 10% original finish turned patina on receiver. Butt stock is sound, no splits or cracks, never sanded or refinished, usual dings and use marks. Trap door operates correctly; no cleaning rod present. Forearm has a couple of cracks. No extra holes anywhere. Magazine tube is a replacement and is missing retaining band ring. Decent bore, no rings and no major pitting, just normal black powder fouling, rifling still showing full length but worn. Gentleman I purchased this from gave me the original magazine tube (in case a die-hard collector wants to put it back on, so I will ship it with the rifle), which has split about 1/2 its length. Original spring and follower are intact. I also have and will supply to the buyer a Cody Museum factory letter, showing manufacture and shipment in July 1878. 4-digit serial number in the low 5xxx range. 45-75 caliber of course for which all of the first edition 1876s were chambered. Original sights include German silver front and 1876-marked long ladder rear (slider does fit tightly and stay in place when raised). Of the few Open Tops in better condition that have surfaced and sold, $8,000 to $12,000 have been the norm, so this one is relatively cheap and adjustments made for non-factory mag tube. Still a rare rifle and not often offered for sale as these Open Tops typically stay tucked away in private collections (some Winchester enthusiasts have never even seen one!!).
Antique so no FFL necessary. No international sales. Can ship directly to your door assuming your local laws allow it. Payment via money order or bank check only (no PayPal or credit cards). 3-day non-firing inspection. Returns accepted as long as firearm has not been taken apart. Return shipping is the buyer's responsibility.
