Colt Single Action Army Artillery Model 17-40
Colt Single Action Army 45 cal., U.S. Artillery model with mixed serial numbers, as is correct, as these were dismantled Cavalry revolvers that were later altered in the late 1890s to the 5-1/2” length, then re-assembled (with no regard to matching parts), and refurbished to replace the ineffective 38 COLT D/A models. The frame number is in the 185XXX VG+ bore, about a 6 on a scale of 10. Fine tight smooth action with the clicks on the hammer and a crisp lock-up. The exterior is mostly a smooth even grey metal with both the barrel and cylinder having a brown patina. The metal is a very good a little bit of corrosion on barrel cylinder and frame. Address is very good and patent markings are somewhat thin, probably weakened during the refurbishing in 1898; has “US” marked next to Pat., dates. Original one-piece walnut grips have no cartouche remaining but are very good fine with 3 not clear on back of right grip. Bulls-eye ejector rod head. The barrel, cylinder, and straps are all mixed numbered and all P, HN, P inspected as is proper for these Artillery reworks. Especially the military marked ones VG+.
