Description:
SOLD...Antique Austin Freeman revolver. Here is seldom seen Freeman revolver. Very few ever made. Some say maybe up to 5000 but then only about 2000 ever produced from 1863 to 1864. Caliber is .44 percussion. Has the standard 7 1/2” barrel. The markings address on the top of the frame is very good{see photo}.. S/N 760 and matching. Strange thing is I can see were someone long ago has tried to remove the S/N from the frame and bottom of the barrel. The frame number can still be seen with a jewelers loop but hard to get a photo but you can see the remaining portions.{see photo}... Can't make out the barrel number but maybe part of the number 6 no doubt this gun is all matching and correct. The number can clearly be seen on the rear of the cylinder and the cylinder pin{see photos}.. Probably a stolen gun during or after the war but they failed to realize the number on the cylinder. The bore is shot out with just traces of rifling remaining. It is not deeply pitted but just looks like it was shot out during period of use. The mechanics are excellent. Crisp and tight as a new gun. NO cylinder wobble side to side or front to rear. The lock up is tight as a bank vault with NO cylinder movement what so ever. Hammer notches are also perfect and positive with no issues at all.. The cylinder take down lever and push pin to release works perfectly. The gun is a gray patina but has good traces of blue on the rear face of the cylinder and bottom of barrel by the rammer catch. No pitting on the gun and the metal is smooth throughout. Just a couple casting flaws or scratches on the left side of frame but nothing that is detracting at all. The grips are very nice showing some dings and scratches but NO splits or cracks and a perfect factory fit. Untouched front sight never messed with. The rammer works perfectly and the nipples are still very good. I would shoot this gun with no problems but accuracy might not be very good but with a round ball it might shoot better than you think. It is what it is. Very seldom you see these for sale and a very good example a very rare Civil War revolver. Very good info..on these guns in the book called Civil War Pistols written by John D. McAulay and explains the manufacturing and the numbers actually made of this rare revolver. A very reasonable price for this nice example if you want one to complete your Civil War revolver collection but do not want to pay many thousand dollars for one with some finish. You won't find one of these any cheaper than this and it is like new mechanically and absolutely all correct and matching. Would like to know the history on this one as I would bet it would be very interesting. $20 insured shipping. Call 765-728-8049 with any questions or more photos. Check back often as I will be listing more antique firearms soon. Thanks for looking.
