Description:

“JOSH GOLCHER” Marked Antique Smooth Rifle

Quintessential American Pioneer Long Gun

Here we present an antique Percussion “Smooth Rifle”, made circa 1840 in the Northeastern United States.

The American Longrifle, more commonly, but less correctly, known as the 'Kentucky rifle', was described by Captain John G. W. Dillin in the dedication to his seminal 1924 book, The Kentucky Rifle:

“From a flat bar of soft iron, hand forged into a gun barrel; laboriously bored and rifled with crude tools; fitted with a stock hewn from a maple tree in the neighboring forest; and supplied with a lock hammered to shape on the anvil; an unknown smith, in a shop long since silent, fashioned a rifle which changed the whole course of world history; made possible the settlement of a continent; and ultimately freed our country of foreign domination.

Light in weight; graceful in line; economical in consumption of powder and lead; fatally precise; distinctly American; it sprang into immediate popularity; and for a hundred years was a model often slightly varied but never radically changed.”

This .50 caliber “smooth rifle” is equipped with a front and rear sight. The lock is marked “JOSH GOLCHER”. This smooth bore long gun would have been an invaluable tool for those on the fringes of society, namely those that we think of as settling the Frontier in the United States. The bore being unrifled would have made it possible for a variety of ammunition to be used. Whether hunting and gathering or defending the homestead, this tool would have gotten the job done.

The overall condition is good. The iron parts have a dark patina. The markings on the lock are legible. The stock is good with a repaired sliver along the top of the forearm. The bore is smooth and dark. The action is not functional. It has spring tension, but does not hold in the full- and half-cock notches.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 37-1/4 inches in length.

Caliber: .50
