Description:

Antique SHARPS & HANKINS .32 4-SHOT Pepperbox

Revolving Firing Pin Pistol in .32 Caliber

Here we present an antique Sharps & Hankins Model 3 Pepperbox Pistol, made circa 1866 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Christian Sharps invented his famously large bore, breech-loading rifle in 1848, after practicing gun-making under John Hall at Harpers Ferry Armory. In 1859, he premiered another unique design in the 4-barreled pepperbox pistol with a unique revolving firing pin, made for 19th Century concealed carry. This repeating design was able to utilize the new rimfire ammunition like Smith & Wesson, without infringing on Smith & Wesson’s Rollin White Patent for bored through chambers on a revolver’s cylinder. This gave Sharps a leg up in the market since everyone else either had to produce single shot pistols, come up with an alternate ammunition and weapon design, or just stick with percussion until the patent expired. They made very nice, easy to use and compact firearms for 19th Century conceal and carry.

The right side of the frame reads “SHARPS PATENT/JAN. 25 1859”. The top of the barrel cluster reads “ADDRESS SHARPS & HANKINS PHILADELPHIA PENN”. Each side of the grip is carved with an “A”. This variant features an extractor.

The overall condition is very good. The metal is light gray. The markings are clear and legible. Serial numbers match. Grips are good. The bores are rifled and clean. The gun is nearly functional, the hammer goes into half- and full-cock, the hammer releases the hammer, but there is not enough spring tension to push the hammer forward. Overall a good looking gun.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 3-1/2 inches in length.
