Drilling, Austrian Franz Sodia (premier gunmaker since 1871) 12 x 12 side by side over VERY RARE .308 Win. rifle barrel. 1971 production. Features 24 3/4” Boehler Blitz Stahl (STAR) Special Steel Barrels for lighter Weight. Shotgun non-ejector barrels are choked Modified and Full, 2 ¾” Although built in 1971, they are “as new” inside and out, with bead front sight and mechanical flip-up leaf rear sight when rifle barrel is selected. Greener style side safety. The Action balls are nicely scalloped and have Purdey side clips. Receiver is case-hardened coin finished contrasting nicely with rust blued barrels, blued trigger guard, and blued top level. Triggers are gold-- front set trigger for the rifle barrel when selected
This is a side-plated action with Purdey-style double bite underlugs and a Kersten cross-bolt top lock. Receiver is elaborately engraved: top, bottom and sides – rivaling anything coming out of Europe. Full, deep relief engraving with the finest Teutonic leaves and scroll and game animals: On the left -- two roe deer and a red stag. On the right – a stocking fox after a partridge and three game birds in flight. On the bottom of the action where one lump protrudes – it is inscribed with the maker’s location: Carinthir, Austria. The beautifully patterned rib is interrupted with two claw mount bases and between the bases, engraved in gold, is the maker’s name: “FRANZ SODIA, FERLACH, AUSTRIA.”
The intricately engraved blued steel trigger guard carries the serial number, 17816, and extends the lower tang to a point meticulously inlaid in the pistol grip.
The stock is highly figured, rarely seen on German and Austrian drillings, with small pancake cheek piece with shadow line. The French walnut color is rich and lively in warm brown with dark stump figure. Stock furniture includes engraved bullet trap with latch in toe-line of stock and horn grip cap with engraved screw head. Has an elegant forend nearly 9 ½ “ with wrap around checkering 28 LPI, diamonds still sharp to the touch, perfectly executed fine double borders, and carries an inlaid Anson and Deeley release, engraved and finished to match the case hardened finished action inlaid in tight points at both ends. This is a true work of the gunmaker’s art. Length of Pull is 14” to leather covered recoil pad, still in mint condition. Weight with scope is 8 lb, 8 oz.
Scope is a high quality Austrian Kahles Helia Super variable 2.3-7x36 (Ser. No. 106268) with German #5 reticle (fine standard crosshair with three heavy duplex lines – 2 sides and bottom), mounted in Quick Detachable German claw mounts. It is sighted in perfectly.
Comes in custom-made leather covered trunk case with gunmaker’s label.
The entire gun is 98%, practically as new as in 1971 and bores are perfect. Replacement cost today is $21,750 without scope, mounts and case.

About the Gunmaker: Franz Sodia, Ferlach Austria, was founded in 1871 by Anton Sodia and has continued as a family-run business since, changing the company name when Anton’s son, Franz, took over after the father’s death in 1935.
In 1981, ten years after this drilling was made, the company celebrated its 110-year anniversary with the participation of renowned personalities and dignitaries from business and politics. In August 1981, the Austrian Minister of Commerce personally awarded the national award to Franz Sodia that allows their company to use the Austrian Coat of Arms in the course of trade, recognizing their products as being produced with national best-quality craftsmanship. The grandson of Franz Sodia continues the tradition of producing exclusive best grade hunting arms.
