CONFEDERATE Cavalry Saber by Nashville Plow Works

Civil War Sword Marked “CSA” on the Guard

Here we present an antique “CSA” Civil War Cavalry Saber, made circa 1861 by Nashville Plow Works in Nashville, Tennessee. The Nashville Plow Works was, as the name implies, a farming implement manufacturer owned by two men with the last names of Sharp and Hamilton. When the American Civil War began, they converted their production from plow making to sword making. Production was fairly short-lived, however, since the Union Army took Nashville early in 1862.

This example is marked “CSA” and “NASHVILLE PLOW WORKS” on the cast brass hand guard. The backstrap is made of brass. The scabbard is made of iron, with brass throat, drag and rings. The overall construction is on the rough side, just as many Confederate manufactured weapons tended to be. Cast parts were not completely polished smooth of their casting marks and the like. These are all hallmarks of the Nashville Plow Works cavalry sabers.

The overall condition is very good. The leather grip is weathered, but intact, as is the braided wire wrap. The brass is dark with age, with wear to the lettering. The leather washer is original. The iron scabbard is lightly pitted throughout, as is the blade of the sword. The blade has been cleaned up a bit. Confederate weapons are quite rare in general, due to their limited numbers and severe attrition. Here is a rare opportunity to own one of the most desirable makers of Confederate swords.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Compare to one which was sold for $8050 by the venerable James Julia!

Blade is 36-1/8 inches in length.

Overall condition as seen in photos.
