Description:
For sale, a very nice World War 1 production Remington Model 1917 Enfield complete with an original 1917 dated M1907 leather sling.  This rifle was built in November of 1917 as the original barrel date shows, and was likely issued and used in WW1.  November 1917 was the start of Remington gearing up to produce these rifles in quantity and saw only approx. 10,000 made compared to the following month of December, when production jumped to 45,000.  Later dates in 1918 Remington was making over 3 and 400,000 rifles in a month to give you an idea of how small 10,000 is for a month's production.  November 1917 dated Remington made rifles are quite scarce because of the low production numbers.  At some point after WW1 this rifle was sent to an arsenal for inspection and rebuilding as nearly all were that were in U.S. inventory.  This particular rifle was parkerized over the original blue finish, and appears to be all original parts except for the stock which is a replacement Eddystone.  It is stamped with the code and initials of the inspector of the arsenal/depot that did the work "BGM-K", which we have not been able to track down.  It was likely a small depot that did not do very many rebuilds and not very well known.  After this 1917 Enfield was rebuilt it is anyone's guess where this rifle went.  It could have stayed in an arsenal somewhere until it was sold as surplus, or it could have been re-issued during WW2 to some rear echelon soldier before being sold thru the CMP in the 1960's.  The overall condition and appearance of this rifle is excellent.  The parkerized finish is nice and even and all of the stampings are still nice and legible.  This rifle has an excellent bore and should shoot great.  The stock is in good shape overall with no cracks or repairs, but it does have some clamping/vise dents on the side you can see in the pictures.  Everything works 100% like it did the day it left the Remington factory 100 years ago!  It has an original 1917 dated M1907 U.S. sling made by the Harvey Wheeler company that is still pliable and solid.  If you have been looking for a nice example of a WW1 Remington 1917 Enfield for your collection that you can shoot without feeling bad, this would be a perfect choice.
