Description:
The Springfield Trapdoor Rifle and Carbine are some of the most easily recognizable U.S. Military weapons of all time.  Different variations of the Trapdoor design were used for decades and most famously used in the American Indian wars in the Western sates.  They were very well made and finely finished with the best materials available at that time, and represented a huge leap forward from the muzzle-loading arms that came before them.  This breech loading cartridge rifle was powerful and accurate, and when cared for properly, extremely reliable.  The Trapdoor Springfield remained popular after it's service with the U.S. Military, and they were bought and used for hunting and protection by civilians on a large scale.  This particular Trapdoor is an 1879 Model.  It is in excellent condition overall.  As you can see in the pictures, most of the original factory finishes are still in excellent shape.  The blue finish on the barrel, cleaning rod, lock plate, receiver block, bands, and trigger guard still looks good with just some light wear, thinning, and patina from age.  The case hardened breech block, hammer, and tang still show some case colors on the exterior, with bright and vibrant colors showing in the protected areas like the underside of the breech block.  The 1879 Type 5 Rear sight is in excellent condition, the sight slide is still tight and there is no damage to any of the parts.  The hammer works 100% like it was designed, with all 3 positions locking in properly with strong audible clicks.  The bore on this rifle is PRISTINE!  It is bright and 100% free from any pitting or erosion.  The rifling is very strong with sharp lands and grooves.  The breech block locks up tight with zero play in it and the firing pin looks minty with no wear at the tip.  The original stock is also in very good condition.  It appears to be free from any cracks or repairs and still shows the inspection cartouche on the left side although it is barely legible.  The "circle P" on the keel of the butt stock is also still present and it is very clear and legible.  If you have been looking for an example of a Springfield Trapdoor for your collection that is nice enough to be an investment but not too minty to shoot, this 1879 Model Trapdoor would be a perfect choice.  It looks very attractive and would be an excellent display piece and at the same time it is mechanically perfect and would be a blast to shoot!  This is an antique so it can ship directly to your door.
