Description:
SOLD...Antique 1873 Winchester 44-40 octagon barrel. Here is a nice 1873. It has the standard 24” octagon barrel. S/N 217542 made in 1886.. When I bought this gun I noticed the lower tang did not fit the receiver perfectly and had been worked on. It also had a S/N that was too high for this early gun. This is an early third model with no caliber markings on the barrel or the brass carrier and is correct for the early third models. I just happen to have a good lower tang that came off of a 44-40 octagon barrel rifle and installed it. The S/N is still to high to be correct but will letter as a 44-40 octagon barrel 1873. It does not fit perfectly as you can see in the close up photo. Just a very small area right above the trigger {see photo}... If you are good with a round file and some touch up coloring you can easily make it fit perfectly but the number is still to high for the early third model guns. Now that is out of the way I can get to the description. The bore is good shootable bore with strong rifling and shows the normal black powder roughness but no big craters and no rings or bulges. The mechanics are excellent and it feeds, fires and ejects perfectly. Strong positive half cock and full cock notches. The metal is a smooth untouched medium plum brown patina that has no pitting and not messed with. The screws are all pretty nice and not all burred up and all are serviceable. The markings are excellent. Has the original rear sight and a old period of use Marble's front sight. Still has the original dust cover that retracts with the lever throw. The wood is good with the forearm showing a small chip out on the front right side as you can see. It still fits tight and full to the metal and never sanded on or messed with. NO other chips or cracks and just a couple very light handling dings. The butt stock is very nice with no splits or cracks and fits tight and full to the metal. Not a bad ole 73 at all and if you have a lower tang with a S/N around 120,000 or lower you could make this gun correct. I have this one priced according to the condition with the lower tang. If it all was correct it would be priced at $2100 but it is what it is. Still a very nice shooter if you are looking for a very reasonable 1873 in the most sought after 44-40 caliber with octagon barrel. Call 765-728-8049 with any questions or more photos. $50 insured shipping. Thank you for looking and check back often.
