Payment Types Accepted: cash, wire Description: Extremely rare example of Colt's first venture into semi-automatic pistols.  In effect, these pistols are the "Patersons" of Colt autos. These .38 calibre rimless smokeless pistols were manufactured from 1900-1903.  This is SERIAL No. #723 of the production run of about 3,500.   COLT FACTORY LETTER showing that the pistol was shipped September 4, 1900 to the "COLT'S PATENT FIRE-ARMS MANUFACTURING COMPANY, SAN FRANCISCO AGENCY, SAN FRANCISCO, CA." Most collectors will never see one of these guns in person.  Several of the features of the 1900 are quite primitive when compared in later developments of the 1900, 1902 models which lead to the Model 1911.  This is the rarest of the rare models of the 1900, with the rear sighjt popping up to act as a hammer safety.  During the production run, the rear sight was changed to a sight mounted in traditional dove-tailed fashion.  After serial # 2,200, the dove-taile sight was standard and many of the early sight safety models were sent in to have the modification, so very few of these "sight safety" models exist.  In addition to the low number manufactured. In the runup to both WW I and WW II, America organized huge steel scrap drives and many of the model 1900 and 1902 pistols were scrapped since the new .38 Super Auto and the .45 caliber became the powerful replacements. This firearm is all matching serial numbers, sharp lettering, easy to read.  The clip is the proper factory clip marked "PAT'D SEPT 9 1884. Left side markings are in two lines, "BROWNING'S PATENT                                                        "PAT'D APRIL 20 1897'   and "COLT'S PATENT FIRE ARMS MFG. CO HARTFORD CONN U.S.A.' Right side: "AUTOMATIC COLT                    CALIBRE 38 RIMLESS SMOKELESS" This firearm has no slide stop, a pointed spur hammer and a rather straight grip, with factory wooden grips. Slide serrations are in the rear of the slide and the rampant colt os on the left rear of the slide.
