Description:
SMITH&WESSON AUSTRALIAN MODEL, NEW MODEL No. 3 SINGLE ACTION REVOLVER.  Serial number 12,861..  ONLY 250 PISTOLS OF THE ENTIRE PRODUCTION RUN OF 35,796 WERE MADE IN THE 7 INCH BARREL, All were the AUSTRALIAN MODEL, All Australians were chambered only in.44 S&W Russian, all were nickel plated and were in the serial ranges of the low 12,000's or low 13,000's.  And all were made with a shoulder stock.  This pistol has the indentation in the butt to fit the shoulder stock.
Although factory records indicate manufacture/shipping 1878-1912, recent reference (Supica/Nahas book;q.v. from informatiuon received direct from S&W states "all frames were mfd. by 1898 making this gun an antique!
S&W Historical Foundation letter requested. A version of this pistol was used by Bob Ford to sent Jesse James to his maker.
This pistol has been in my grandfathers lifetime collection since before I learned to shoot in the 1950's.  I remember shooting it as a child.
This pistol also has the broad arrow mark of the Australian Colonial Police on the revolver butt.
I believe this weapon was confiscated in the 1930's or 40's by the Aberdeen Washington Police Department where my grandfather was a lifelong policeman and Chief of Detectives.
I have never seen another Australian Colonial Police Contract pistol offered for sale.  And I am told that most in Australia were probably turned in during Australia's government buy up of weapons.  This is a nearly unique pistol.  I am told by dealers that so few were made, fewer survived and no one has a record of a recent sale.  I am guessing on price and will listen to argument.
nO SHOULDER STOCK WITH IT.1878-1898. Factory letter documents the pistol as shipped by the factory on December 14, 1881 to M.W. Robinson Co., N.Y.C., N.Y. The shipment of 250 pistols was the Australian Contract. This pistol obviously sat in an Australian arsenal, unused for nearly 100 years until someone sent it out of the country to save it from confiscation and destruction. This is one of a handful left in the world. A unique firearm.
