Description:
For sale, a stunning 1906 manufactured Colt New Service with Colt deluxe factory Fleur de Lis checkered grips and a 7.5 inch barrel chambered in the seldom seen .38-40 WCF cartridge.  This New Service was manufactured in 1906 and thus still has the high polish Colt factory blue finish that was discontinued in 1914.  It also has the factory fire blue finished trigger and back of hammer.  These early Colt factory finishes are simply beautiful.  The grips are the deluxe Colt Fleur de Lis style grips which are very scarce.  They are not numbered but appear to be the right period as Colt started using medallions on these grips in 1909.  As you can see in the pictures they fit this revolver very well, but there is no way to tell definitively if they are original to this gun.  Another factor making this New Service a scarce example is the chambering.  It is chambered in the .38-40 WCF cartridge, not a common caliber in this large frame Colt.  The bore in this Colt is good overall with strong rifling but some small pitted spots along the interior length.  The cylinder bores are excellent and bright.  Mechanically, this New Service is flawless.  The double action and single action operation work perfectly, and are the kind of smooth only felt on these early Colt's.  It locks up tight like a bank vault with NO visible play in the action.  This Colt really has to been seen and felt to truly be appreciated.  In many collectors' opinions there simply was not another large frame revolver that compared to this period New Service.  The fit, finish, and feel were second to none.  Even today, with the modern manufacturing processes that use tolerances that were unthinkable when this gun was made, guns still do not feel as well made and finely tuned as this New Service.
