Description:
A nice cased set of American dueling pistols made by P. Vallee in Philadelphia, Pa.  This set is .42 caliber and has saw handle style stocks with 9 inch octagon barrels with smooth bores.  The locks are back action, with scroll and floral engraving and engraved with the maker's name and location, "P. Vallee, Phila".  P. Vallee is short for a gun maker named Prosper Vallee who made firearms and was a gunsmith circa 1840 in Philadelphia.  The saw handle style stocks have rounded checkered pistol grips and ebony wood tips.  One stock is free from cracks and repairs; the other has a small crack that runs along the wedge from the ebony tip to near the front of the lock but it does not appear to affect the overall integrity of the action as it does not reach the lock, and it is only on the right side.  These dueling pistols have externally adjustable single set triggers.  Both pistols may need some work/cleaning as one will not stay cocked, and the other has a sluggish feeling trigger.  These P. Vallee duelers come in a beautiful fitted case complete with period accoutrements including: a ramrod with an adjustable powder measure at the end, a cleaning rod, mainspring clamp, L-shaped screwdriver, 2-sided punch, and a patch cutting punch.  The blue felt lined case has brass hardware and is fitted with a lock.  The key is in the case but the lock appears to be frozen.  The lid of the fitted case has an inlaid rectangular brass plate that has been covered with old masking tape to protect it, that can be removed by the new owner.  This is a nice honest original set of American made saw handle duelers by a known Pennsylvania gunmaker, and would be a great addition to any antique arms collection.
