Description:
We are pleased to offer this all-original World War 1 Colt "Black Army" 1911 Model .45 ACP pistol manufactured in 1918.  The 1918 manufactured Colt 1911's are known as "Black Army" models today by collectors due to their dark blue, almost black appearance.  They particularly look black when compared to Colt 1911s from the previous 2 years.  This difference in finish color was a result of Colt eliminating some of the polishing and finishing steps prior to bluing it, and changing to a gas fired "oven bluing" process.  This was done to save time and increase production to help meet the increasing need for sidearms for the U.S. Army and Marines fighting on the front lines of WW1. Ultimately this expedited bluing process was not as carefully controlled, and the bluing was often unusually thin on some pistols and not as durable.  The poor surface preparation also caused poor adhesion and the finish had a tendency to flake off.  These 1918 "Black Army" pistols were only made until the end of the war in 1918, and Colt resorted back to the brushed blue finish used prior to 1918.  This particular example is serial number 490244 and is completely original and correct.  We have gone thru it and every single part is the correct original just as it left the Colt factory.  Considering the finish on these pistols is often almost entirely flaked off, the finish on this one is quite good.  It retains somewhere between 75% and 80% of the dark blue finish.  The actual finish wear is likely just on the grip straps, the rest of missing finish appears to have flaked off rather than worn off.  The "HP" marked barrel has an excellent bore.  It is still bright with nicely defined and sharp rifling, with no pitting or erosion of any kind.  The original checkered with diamonds Walnut grips are in very good condition as well.  They are free from cracks or repairs and the checkering is still somewhat sharp.  Everything works on this Colt 100% like it did when it left the factory almost 100 years ago.  It comes with an original and proper unmarked 2-tone magazine.  If you have been looking for a "Black Army" Colt 1911 that was likely in combat but still in good condition, this is your chance!
