STUNNING, EARLY MODEL COLT LIGHTENING MEDIUM FRAME RIFLE, EARLY PRODUCTION SERIAL No.10034 OF 89777 MADE. Under serial number # 84000 (approx), are made prior to 1898, so this is an "antique."
The Medium Frame Colt Lightning rifles were the FIRST slide action rifles built in the Colt factory. It shared chamberings with the Double Action Model 1878 Frontier revolver in 32-20, 38-40 and 44-40 and thus could serve as a companion are. This adds to collector appeal. This rifle is chambered in 38-40. The blueing is 90% with brown patina showing along the tubular magazine Minor pitting mostly along the left side of the barrel. Wood is uncracked with heavy checkering on the slide grip and only minor marks on the buttstock.
There are 7 major varients of the Medium Frame, this rifle being the FIRST (standard Model), the only one showing the "ELLIOT'S PATENTS" markings, ending with last patent date of 1883. The rifle appears to be 85-90% original blue with crisp action. Adjustable ramp rear sight. This is NOT one of the very few rifles made with a smooth bore. Barrel markings are deep and crisp and the barrel is marked "38 CAL."
This rifle was in the collection of my grandfather, John Benjamin Gillespie (1899-1973), former Chief of Detectives of the Aberdeen, Washington Police Department and has been in the family since the 1960-70.
