Description:
Merwin, Hulbert & Co. First Pocket Model Single Action .38, 5 shot revolver with no trigger guard. Spur trigger with cylinder pin exposed at the front of the frame.  Distinguishing feature is a round loding hole cut in the recoil shield, with no loading gate.
This pistol is nickel finish with the most deeply etched engraving I have ever seen on a firearm. The engraving is extensive on both sides of the pistol which, according to my research, is VERY RARE>Nickel is very bright with four small areas of pitting and I would rate it at 95% overall.  Bore is excellent and rifling distinct.  Grips are black plastic with the dogs head insignia.
The action on the pistol is unique. It has a twist open mechanism.  The latch at the bottom of the frame is pushed in while the barrel and cylinder are twisted clockwise and pulled foreward to open. Due to the exceptionally tight machining tolerances of these revolvers, when the barrel and cylinder were twisted to the right, they would return to an almost fully closed position on the frame due to the "suction" created by the tight tolerances.  Good "suction" brings a 20% premium according the the "Blue Book of Gun Values."  This speciman has good suction.
This appears to be and "Exhibition" or "Presentation" grade pistol.  Serial No. 2703. I have set a price based upon that assumption but am willing to be taught by a Merwin collector.
Serial number marked on butt, inside frame on left side under grip and cylinder.
