Description:
Colt Model 1902 Sporting Model with early serial no. 10148.  This Model is serial numbered approx. 4,275--11,000 and 30,000-30,190. Only 6,915 pistols in the Sporting Model were produced! Total production of this Military issue was only 18,066 pistols! The only shorter production run i am aware of is the Sporting Model of this same pistol, at 6,915 pistols total! Serial numbers run from #11,000- 16,000 and from #30,200-43266. Where else can you get such a limited Colt pistol for under $10,000? M IIRounded hammer, rear slide serrations, checkered hard rubber grips, no safety,no slide stop, rear dovetailed sight., mfg. 1902-08.  COLT FACTORY LETTER shows the pistol was shipped to Honeyman Hardware Co. on January 22, 1907.
About 80% of the fire blue shows overall, worst on the left side  Brown patina fading in where fire blue tappers off.Bore shows good rifling, no pitts.  Crisp marking overall.  Grips in 95% with no cracks of chips.
This is another of the family collection started by my grandfather, John Benjamin Gillespie (1899--1973), former Chief of Detectives of the Aberdeen, Washington Police Department.  This gun has been off the market for more than 60 years.
This was Colts second version of an automatic pistol.  The .38 Rimless Smokless cartridge was underpowered and after development of the ,45 ACP Model 1911, many of these guns disappeared into the WW I and WW II metal scrap drives.  With the Model 1900 as scarce as hens teeth, the Model 1902 is another short supply early Colt with great significance and many variations in a small production run.
