Description:
COLT MODEL 1905 .45 Rimless Smokeless, blue fixed sight, checkered walnut grips, SERIAL No 4491,the third developmental Colt Auto, leading to the Colt Model 1911 .45 ACP.  Mfg. 1905--1911 in a total run of approximately 6,100. 7 shot capacity.  Rounded hammer changed to spur hammer (this gun), at about serial no. 3600.  This is Serial No. 4491.  Grips of checkered walnut, casehardened hammer.  Numbered from #1 on up.
COLT FACTORY LETTER indicates the pistol was shipped may 10, 1910, to Townley Metal and Hardware Co., Kansas City, MO.
Two types of slide markings, the first having the 1897 and 1902 dates on the left side of the slide and the second type adding the 1905 patent date.  The speciman has the 1905 date. Slide stop, no safety, nearly vertical grip angle.
Another of the very small production Colt Autos at the turn of the 19th century leading to more powerful automatics.  Prior to WW I and WW II, the U.S. had major metal scrap drives to prepare for war. many of the Colt Model 1900, Model 1902 and Model 1905 pistols were scrapped because the Rimless Smokeless cartridge was considered underpowered after production of the Model 1911 began.  In another 20 years, ALL these early Colt Model Autos will have disappeared to all but the wealthiest collectors.
This pistol has about 75% fire blue and the balance a brown patina.  Least fire blue is along the right side of the slide. Bore shows good rifling.  Grips are excellent with no chips cracks or gouges.  Crisp. tight action.
This is another of the pistols which originated in the collection of my grandfather, John Benjamin Gillespie (1899--1973), former Chief of Detectives of the Aberdeen, Washoington Police Department.  It has been in storage for more than 50 years.
