Description:
Ferlach 16 Bore Boxlock Double Serial Number, 866.22, manufactured in 1922, Austrian Proof NPF (NPF = proof mark Ferlach for nitro, smokeless powder). Marked with Nicht Fur Kugel - “NICHT FUR KUGEL”: Literally translates to “NOT FOR BALL”. This is the indication that the shotgun has choked barrels and is not safe to use solid lead balls which were popular for hunting large and/or dangerous game in the late 1890’s-early 1900’s ("NICHT FOR KUGEL” was required for shotguns sold in Austria under the Austrian 1891 proof law). ″ PRIMA ESSEN” Krupp Steel ejector barrels. Krupp-Essen means fluid steel barrels (forged as opposed to Damascus/twist barrels), Krupp-Essen was a famous steel maker that desolved after WWII.

The barrels are chocked full, 2 3/4″ chambers, Double triggers, 70% coverage of intricate scroll engraving.   Excellent wood with beautiful black/brown contrast, Splinter forend, Pistol grip stock, basket-weave pattern horn buttplate, Horn grip cap, European style shadowline cheekpiece. The walnut stock has a left side cheekpiece and it rates very good plus with an added oil finish, a couple small chips on forend, scattered dings, light scratches and handling marks. The gun bears Austrian proofs, the barrels are marked "PRIMA ESSEN", the gun has sling swivels, double triggers and an automatic safety. Very tough to find a gun from this time period in this condition from the Ferlach Guild.
