“1857” Dated Antique SPRINGFIELD 1855 Rifle Musket
Civil War Weapon Used by Both Sides
Here we present an antique US Springfield Model 1855 Rifle Musket, made in 1857 at Springfield Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts. These were the first US muskets made for using the .58 caliber ball and was part of a plan to standardize weaponry across all branches of the military. It also utilized the Maynard Tape Priming System instead of metallic primers on a tubular nipple. The tape priming system housed a roll of paper caps and the mechanism was also designed to feed the next cap from the roll as the hammer was cocked. These were relatively short-lived, especially as the Civil War began and the Union went with the more streamlined Model 1861.
The overall condition is that of a relic. The lock is marked “1857” and “US/SPRINGFIELD”. It was shortened long ago, probably after it was sold as surplus after the war. The left side of the barrel features the federal proof marks. The metal is dark with age. The markings are legible. The bore is dark and untouched. The action is not functional as it has no spring tension.
