Description:
This is a very early true pair (likely the first) of Beesley Self-Opener 12 bores, serial #s 11095 & 11096. They were completed at the end of 1881 and sold to a man named G. Howard in Jan. 1882. They subsequently ended up in the possession of the Earl of Guilford, Waldershare Park, Dover, which is how they are cased now. Both sets of barrels were reproved in London in October, 1960, and some time after that they came to the U.S. They are in very fine condition with virtually all of a lovely rebrown on the Damascus barrels. The engraving is unmarred (James Lucas was the engraver). The stocks, at some point have been refinished and the checkering recut, and are also in very fine condition. Here is a true pair of nitro proved, ejector Purdeys, with a Purdey letter, for less than the price of most of the single Purdeys on this site. A virtual twin to these guns, in both condition and appearance, is shown in Plate 74 of Donald Dallas' book "Purdey Gun and Rifle Makers, The Definative History". I am looking for a nice 16 bore English or Scottish hammer double with Damascus barrels longer than 27 inches, and would consider such a gun as a partial trade. The photos I have included do not begin to do these guns justice, they are absolutely beautiful. Please call Peter Morgan for more information 406 842 7655 or 337 241 6689 cel. Thank you.
