SALE PENDING
Jean Van Maele of Brussels Belgium, Gunmaker to the King of Serbia, made this elegant side-plated boxlock 16 gauge SxS has nearly 100% fine scroll engraving on the frame, top tang, trigger guard, top lever and forearm extension.  Then to top of the engraving the shoulders are profusely engraved with a “heavy” leaf pattern..very distinctive and very well executed.

The Damascus pattern on the barrels is nearly flawless save for a small scuff on the left tube, midway between the breech and the muzzle.  The bores are very nice and bright with a couple of small areas of pitting in both tubes about 5” ahead of the 2 ¾” chambers.  The right barrel has a .670” bore diameter (.662” is standard) with Cylinder choke.  The left barrel has a .678” bore diameter with .015” modified choke.  Not proofed for modern ammo!

Other important features are: automatic safety, double triggers with the front trigger articulating, automatic ejectors, long tang, Anson style forearm release, engraving escutcheon, side plates, side clips, third fastener and a skeleton steel butt plate.

The nicely grained walnut stock has a 14 1/8” LOP over the skeleton butt plate/ 1 9/16” DAC and 2 ¾” DAH with neutral cast.  Matching splinter forearm.  Extremely fine checkering.

In summary this is a really interesting, handsome and fun game gun.  Not much is know about Van Maele other that he made revolvers, rifles and shotguns and was obviously highly regarded being the gunmaker to the King!  Also it is obvious that this is a very high-grade model of one of his works.

Overall the metal has almost no original colors with the frame looking like and coin finish and the barrels a nice grey Damascus.  The wood has extraordinary fit to the metal, no cracks or damage and just few minor “bumps and bruises”.  Also, the gun weighs 6 lbs. 5 oz. and balances at the hinge pin.
