Description:
***   SOLD   ***   James Woodward was known for the very fine finish of his guns, the highly figured walnut selected for his stocks, and the exquisite engraving employed. This great gun is no exception. It displays all the well known features of the Woodward “house style” including the arcaded fences, the “fish eye” cocking indicator, and the “T-shaped” safety. And, it has a sidelever opener – a very rare thing on a Woodward. All this in its leather case with Woodward maker’s label, a Purdey label, and the original charge card for the ammunition specified.   ***    Number 1 of a pair this Woodward was made circa 1890 and was both re-barreled and restocked by Purdey, the successor company to James Woodward & Sons, sometime in the mid 1970’s. James Purdey & Sons bought the Woodward company as a going concern in 1948 and still produces Woodward doubles on order. The gun weighs 6lb 9oz and has double triggers and auto ejectors.   ***   The 27” Purdey-made barrels are chambered for 2-1/2” cartridges and are topped by a solid raised concave tapered rib that is stippled to reduce glare. London nitro proofed in 1975. The right barrel is bored 0.733 with a constriction of 0.12 for a tight Improved Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.030. The left barrel is also bored 0.733 and has a constriction of 0.016 for Light Modified choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.032. There are two inscriptions on the barrels. The first says “James Woodward Barrels Made By J. Purdey & Sons”. The other barrel is inscribed “Audley House  South Audley Street  London  England”.    ***   The replacement straight grip stock and splinter forearm were made by Purdey from very highly figured walnut. Needless to say the fit and finish is superb and the checkering is crisp. The forearm was made longer than customary perhaps to provide a more comfortable grip. Stock dimensions are 14-1/2” to a checkered butt by 1-3/8” by 2”. Cast off for the right hand shot.   ***   Perfect for game or clays. A very handsome sidelever double at a great price and a gun that you will be proud to own. Life is short. If not now, then when?  ***   This Woodward is classified as an antique firearm and will not require an FFL. Not for sale where prohibited by state or local laws. Buyer is responsible for all shipping, insurance, and any other related charges. I give a 3-day non-firing inspection period and will only accept returns at buyer’s expense if the gun is not as described in the listing.
