Rebounding hammers stay below shooter’s line of sight when cocked and the action can be opened with the hammers in the cocked position. Serial number 7754 places manufacture circa 1883 – 84. William Powell was a high quality gunmaker and the firm is still in business today in Birmingham. Often referred to as the “Purdey of Birmingham” this is a very handsome hammer double. Weight is 6lb 7oz.   ***   The straight grip stock and splinter forearm are made of nicely figured walnut. The forearm has an Anson push-rod release. Stock dimensions are 14-1/4” to an ultra thin original butt plate by 1-1/2” by 2-1/2”. Neutral cast.   ***   The 29” nitro Damascus barrels are highly figured and chambered for 2-1/2” cartridges. They are topped by a concave game style rib on which is inscribed “William Powell & Son 13 Carrs Lane Birmingham” and “Patent” near the breech. The barrel flats show 0.736 as the bore diameter for the left barrel and my bore gauge shows 0.735. The constriction is 0.022 for Modified choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.025. The barrel flats record 0.724 as the diameter for the right barrel and my gauge measures it at 0.723. There is no constriction in this barrel for Cylinder choke.
