E.J. Churchill S/N: 7542, is a 12 bore, Regal Grade
of superior quality, engraving and finish. It is a 'boxlock' ejector on a 'heavy' Anson & Deeley action. This shotgun was manufactured in 1961, fitted with 'non-typical' 30 inch barrels, 'Churchill Rib', incorporating a 'third bite' barrel extension with 3 inch chambers, and proofed at 3-1/2 tonnes. The barrels are engraved, E.J. Churchill (Gunmakers) Ltd, Orange Street Gunworks, Leicester Square, London and are choked English 1/2 & Full (0.017" & 0.035") The stock is 'Style #9 (in the Churchill Catalog) with a 'Semi-Pistol Grip', 'polished bone grip cap', 'checkered butt', and has a 'vacant stock oval'. The stock checkering is 22 lines per inch in keeping with firearms of this quality. The fore-end is a 'splinter style' with an 'Anson push button' release. The shotgun weighs 7 pounds 12 ounces with the 30 in barrels attached, and was most likely manufactured as a 'pigeon, live bird, or waterfowl' shotgun for a customer in the United Kingdom.

In 1981, E.J. Churchill (Gunmakers) Ltd. was acquired by Don Masters; the then manager of production at Churchill, and all the machinery, parts, etc. along with manufacturing and repairs to Churchill firearms was relocated to Mr. Masters country home in Surrey. (This move was motivated by a massive 'urban renewal program' in the east end of London).

In 1987 the then owner of S/N 7542 ordered a second set of barrels to be custom made for the original action, and these barrels were also assigned S/N 7542. (The 1987 date was determined by reference to the makers manufacturing codes located on the undersides of the barrel flats, and referenced in Mr. Masters book, The House of Churchill). Most likely the new barrels were manufactured from an existing inventory of barrels and parts manufactured when the company was still owned and operated by Robert Churchill. These barrels are engraved E.J. Churchill (Gunmakers) Ltd, Cannon Works, Ockley Road, Dorking, Surrey, England. (This address was the new physical location for E.J. Churchill Ltd, following the company acquisition by Mr. Masters and relocation from central London to Surrey.).

The second set of barrels are marked 'XXV' in 'gold Roman Numerals' on the 'Churchill Rib' and are 25 inches in length and also incorporate the 'third bite' as well as having 3 inch chambers, and are proofed at 3-1/2 tonnes. These barrels are choked English 1/4 & 1/2 (0.007" & 0.018"). The shotgun weighs 7 6 ounces with the 25 inch barrels attached. In keeping with the style preferred by Robert Churchill, these barrels have a 'beavertail' fore-end which allows for a firmer grip with the left hand. This pattern, chosen by Robert Churchill, differed from the usual beavertail fore-end in that it was approximately 1-1/2 inch longer than normal. This was achieved by utilizing an 'access hole' 1 inch in diameter, drilled through the fore-end above the normal push rod position for the release of the pushrod. When the second set of barrels was manufactured and fitted to the original action, the shotgun was still in the UK and subsequently imported to the USA in the late 1990's when Mr. Masters began introducing his side-lock Churchill shotguns to America.

Please note that wood is darker than it appears in these pictures. We have had the wood completely redone by a professional and the gun has not been handled or fired since.
