Remington Rolling Block No. 1 Military Carbine
One of the Most Rugged, Reliable & Popular Rifles of the 19th Century
Here we present an antique Remington Rolling Block Military Carbine, made circa 1870. Denmark was the first of a long list of countries that would adopt the Remington Rolling Block for their militaries, after Sam Remington’s exhibition trip to Europe in 1866. Norway and Sweden each followed suit. The appeal of the Rolling Block was its strong, simple action. Though repeating rifles were becoming more and more refined and prevalent in civilian circles, militaries all around the world were still married to the idea of large bore, single shot rifles.
This specimen is chambered for .50-45. It is marked with a separate “7” and “3” on the butt stock. It has seen better days, but could be a nice little project. The metal surfaces are worn. The markings are clear and legible. The forestock is absent, and the butt stock has a sliver missing from the right side, near the bottom tang. The bore is surprisingly excellent. The action is currently frozen.
