Description:
FIRST 1895 SADDLE RING CARBINE I'VE SEEN IN THIS CALIBER! THIS 1915 VINTAGE CARBINE IS IN ".30 GOV. '03" AS STAMPED ON THE RECEIVER RING! The standard caliber for carbines was .30 U.S. Army (.30-40 Krag) with some also made .30-06. Some were also made in .303 British- mainly Canada, but I've never seen one in .30-03. Interestingly, the Winchester books by George Madis say, "Caliber .30-'03 was offered in 1905, but was supplanted by the new .30-06 in 1908; after this date the '03 was a special order caliber." The .30-03 is basically the same as a .30-06 with the '03 having a slightly longer neck. .30-06 ammo can be fired in a .30-03, but not the other way around. Perhaps someone had a load of surplus .30-03 ammo and wanted a carbine to shoot it in! Regardless of the reason, this is a most unusual carbine in fine condition. Fine thinning barrel blue, correct military style rear sight with small ramped front sight, receiver shows good blue on the magazine and lever area and on the lower part of the frame on the left/saddle ring side with the balance worn to gray, exc. bore, tight action, exc. butt stock and forend, handguard is intact (!) and only has one slight hairline crack coming forward of the receiver on the lower left side- easily reinforced and is minor, tight wood to metal fit, never seen one before!
