Description:

CIVIL WAR-TORN Providence Tool 1861 Rifle-Musket

Dated 1864

Here we present an antique U.S. Model 1861 Rifle-Musket, made by contract by Providence Tool Company of Providence, Rhode Island, in 1864. The M1861 is representative of the “everyman’s” rifle during the American Civil War. About 1.5 million rifle-muskets were made in the U.S., over 800,000 of which were made by the Springfield Armory, while the others were made by over 20 different private contractors, providing ample collecting opportunity amongst all the variants. Only about 70,000 were made by Providence Tool Company. This was the last hurrah of the rifle-musket as arms development and tactics rapidly advanced during the short period of the American Civil War. Nevertheless, the 1861 represented new technology as it was made for use with the Minié ball, a hollow based, conical projectile that was small enough to quickly push down the muzzle of a rifled barrel, and expanded to create a good gas seal unlike solid, round ball.

This specimen has a lock marked with a federal eagle with wings outstretched and clutching arrows in the middle of “U.S./PROVIDENCE TOOL CO./PROVIDENCE R.I.” The rear of the lock is dated “1864”. The left side of the gun is marked with the “V/P/Eagle head” proof on the barrel. The left side of the stock still shows a federal inspector cartouche. The wrist of the stock has been tightly wrapped with wire to shore it up against a crack, an old method of repair that gives the gun a “been there, done that” sort of look. The wire is patinated like the rest of the metal surfaces on the gun, suggesting that this was done during the period of use.

This rifle-musket has a war-torn and weathered look that makes it perfect for your Civil War display. This piece is unique in that, while it certainly shows the horrors of war, the mechanism is still very strong and it has not been cut down. The patina is completely untouched. The bore still shows rifling and has clearly been left alone for a very long time. Here is a great opportunity to own a true veteran of the American Civil War.
