Description:

ANTIQUE US Springfield Armory LONG RANGE Trapdoor

Indian Wars-era, Large Bore, Long-Range Rifle

Here we present an antique U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Rifle, made circa 1886 by Springfield Armory. Amazingly, despite the adoption of the ill-fated Model 1882 Chaffee-Reese Bolt Action Magazine Rifle, new models of trapdoor rifles continued to be produced and used all the way through the mid-1890s, until finally, the Krag-Jorgensen was adopted. Trapdoors continued to see use all the way through the Spanish American War in 1898. The U.S. continued to see unrest and conflict with the displaced Native Americans during this time, including the Wounded Knee Massacre on December 29th, 1890. They were sturdy, simple rifles, with plenty of range and power.

This specimen is one of the early production of the Model 1884, featuring a “U.S./MODEL/1873” marked breech, as Ordnance was trying to use up remaining part stock. One of the distinctive features of this model was the highly adjustable, long-range rear sight, called a Buffington rear sight. The front sight is a fine blade, making this sighting combination very effective at long distances. This model was also designed to handle the larger 45-70-500 cartridge, with a 500-grain bullet, versus the 45-70-405 of earlier models of the trapdoor. The lock is marked “Eagle/U.S./Springfield”. The left side of the barrel bears the “V/P/Eagle head” proof marks. The left side of the stock bears the faint remnants of the inspector cartouche. This rifle is also equipped with a checkered detachable metal pistol-grip, which was not standard and scarcely seen, but would nevertheless have been a very handy advantage to the shooter.

The overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces exhibit a bit of original bluing and a dark patina. Some case colors are still visible on the breech door. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock is in very good shape. The bore has sharp rifling and is shiny. The action is excellent. The sling is original and in good condition. Here is a very nice choice for the person interested in the period of the late 19th Century, the Indian Wars, and large bore, long-range shooting.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 32 5/8 inches.
