Description:

SCARCE MEXICAN Contract Remington Rolling Block

Marked with the Republica Mexicana Eagle Crest

Here we present a Scarce Mexican Contract Model 1897 Remington Rolling Block Military Rifle, made around the turn of the 20th Century. The Remington Rolling block rifle had been heavily adopted by countries all around the world by this time. With the advent of smokeless powder and the invention of the Mauser repeating rifle Remington released an updated version chambered for the ammunition, which utilized smaller diameter bullets and greater velocities. Even though the Mauser still held a distinct advantage in firepower, due to its multi-shot capability, Remington still sold many of these based on their lower price, simplicity, and rugged reliability. Many South American countries took interest and purchased them for their militaries.

Mexico purchased nearly 15,000 rifles and carbines. They are desirable for their scarcity, their history, and their markings. The top of the receiver bears a Mexican eagle with a snake in its beak, with “REPUBLICA MEXICANA” arching above it. The barrel forward of the top handguard is marked “7 M.M.-S”. The tang is marked “REMINGTON ARMS COMPANY ILION N.Y.” with patent dates and information underneath. These rifles would have seen use especially prior to World War I, when there was great upheaval and even the Mexican Revolution.

The condition is good, despite many hard years of service. The metal is dark with age. The markings are still clear and legible. The stock shows quite a bit of wear, but remains sturdy. The handguard is just a little loose at the rear. The bore is well-rifled and in good shape. The action is strong.

This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic.
