Description:

RARE & Unique “KENTUCKY” Marked CIVIL WAR Carbine

Triplett & Scott Made for KY Home Guard Circa 1864

Here we present a Rare “KENTUCKY” Marked Triplett & Scott Patent Cavalry Short Carbine, made circa 1864 by Meriden Manufacturing Company of Meriden, Connecticut. Meriden Manufacturing was founded by Charles Parker and his brother, who would later go on to become one of the most famous firearms manufacturers in the world with his beautiful shotguns. That firm would be called Parker Brothers. However, these brothers would first make themselves by contracting for the Union government during the American Civil War. They produced the Triplett & Scott Repeating Carbine on contract with the state of Kentucky for 5,000 pieces. These were to be issued to the Kentucky Home Guard for supply train defense for the Union Army as General Sherman marched on Atlanta. These carbines were made in 1864 and 1865. It is estimated that only 2,000 of the total were the shorter barreled version, like this one here, making them quite rare.

The diversity of weapons, especially carbines, during the Civil War was incredible. All of them are different in their own way. The Triplett & Scott Carbine differentiates itself by its operation. The 7-shot magazine tube is housed in the front of the wrist of the butt stock. By placing the hammer in half-cock and depressing a button with the right thumb, one would be able to twist the forward portion of the gun, which would activate the automatic ejector, pushing the empty case out, before the receiver pushed aside the loading gate on the magazine tube to pick up another cartridge. The design was quite ingenious and the precision with which it was executed is still evident.

The gun is marked “KENTUCKY” on the left side of the receiver. The tang is marked “TRIPLETT & SCOTT/PATENT DEC. 6, 1864”. The left side of the frame is marked “MERIDEN MANFG. CO./MERIDEN. CONN.” The right side of the frame is marked with the serial number. The left side of the stock, just forward of the butt plate is marked “N/WB”, which is most likely a Kentucky state inspector’s mark. This carbine also has sling swivels in a unique arrangement, one on top of the butt stock and one beneath.

The overall condition is fine. The metal surfaces retain much of the original blue finish, with a small amount of reblue. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock is very smooth and shows a nominal bit of handling. The only flaw is the crack where the magazine tube is located. Virtually all of these carbines have this flaw simply based on the way the tube was installed. The wood was just too thin at that point. The bore is sharp and shiny. The magazine follower is visible in the tube, but is currently immobile. The rest of the action is excellent. Here is a rare opportunity to own one of the most unique carbines of the American Civil War, with history specific to Kentucky.
