Description:
NSN, .58 caliber, 38" barrel with a very good bore that has some light pitting and freckling within the grooves. With only 2501 built this rare, Maynard-primed musket is a shortened version of the ubiquitous Model 1855 and has both a shorter barrel and a more diminutive stock. Although known as a “Cadet", the guns retained their sling swivels and were never issued to West Point. This example has an 1859 dated lock and undated, “V/P/(eagle head)" proofed barrel with the metal having a nice, original armory bright finish that has toned to a pewter gray in spots. The edges and markings are crisp, sharp, and clear with some very subtle marks in some places indicating that the metal may have been carefully cleaned long ago. The Maynard tape-priming mechanism is fully functional and the lock is mechanically excellent. The rear sight retains most of the original bright fire bluing, and there is hardly any discernible pitting along the nipple or bolster. The ramrod and all of the metal stock furniture are likewise in excellent original condition while the properly proportioned, smaller Model 1858 walnut stock has some scattered minor handling marks and surface bruises in the armory re-applied oil finish, as well as a few hairline, with-the-grain cracks on the rear of the lockplate, and along the top of the sideplate on the left side. An old brass collection tag is present on the trigger guard denoting that this was no. 276 in the famous collection of Ferdinand W. Roebling III; sold on April 28, 2003 by Little John's Service. The musket was lot 238, and was misidentified as a standard Model 1855. This is a terrific example of a rare U.S. percussion musket, and would make a great addition to any collection. Antique
