Very high quality breech-loading, .46 cal., flintlock, turn-off folding trigger pocket pistol, ca. 1800. Beautifully engraved action body with nice patina. Walnut stock in fine condition with vacant silver shield. Sliding safety. For those who may not understand the functioning of the “folding trigger”, the trigger lays perfectly flush with the underside of the action until the cock is moved from the half-cock to full-cock position. During the cocking of the lock mechanism the “folding trigger” springs out into position ready to fire the gun. The reason for such a mechanism, of course, was to keep the gun as compact as possible for concealment sake and also to give less chance of something getting caught or hung up on clothing during rapid retrieval of the firearm when the chips were down. The “folding trigger” was a relatively intricate mechanism requiring greater skill on the part of the gunmaker and more time to construct, hence, these were relatively expensive pistols in their day. This example remains in fine, mechanically perfect, condition throughout. SOLD Antique: Yes |
