Sharps 1853 Sporting Rifle. SN 8375. Rare and original model 1853 Sharps rifle known as the "Slanting Breech” Sharps. Has the distinctive angled breech block which is where the nickname comes from. According to Flayderman's guide there were only 2,240 of these sporting rifles made with full octagonal barrels and that they were only made between 1854 and 1857. It is in the original .40 caliber barrel bore size and you can still see the lands and grooves inside the barrel. At the breech of the barrel you can see the traces of the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company maker's Mark as well as the Hartford, Connecticut production location. It has the stud style rear sight intact. On the tang of the barrel, you can no longer read the serial number but it is visible below the barrel. The action works on all positions. It is designed with the double trigger system to help aid in target shooting. You can still see traces of the ‘SHARPS PATENT 1852” on the lockplate. This particular version was constructed without using the saddle ring and bar. These guns have a great display because of the brass that was used on the patchbox. This one has the pewter nose cap on the end of the forestock. This gun was used but never abused. This is a nice honest 1853 Sharps pattern heavy barrel sporting rifle that will not break the bank.
