079-0717-3203, Remington NM Army ID to the 43rd Virginia Cavalry, Mosby's Partisian Rangers. I was sold this gun and told it was from Mosby's Partisan Rangers. The gun was supposed to be passed down through a family and found it's way to a Pawn Shop. I was skeptical, but my research shows that Mosby's Cavalry was the only 43rd Cavalry in either Northern or Southern Units. I have never seen a Remington with a Large A, 43 stamped on the grip where the cartouche is normally found. A faint cartouche is under the number. The gun would have had to have been a battlefield capture. But I have handled other weapons for Virginia units that were battlefield captures before. The gun is mottled gray with crisp edges, tight crisp markings. Clear unit markings on grips with slight edge weareand chip loss. Crisp tight action, bright strongly rifled bore with crisp rifling. Scattered spotting in bore.[/p][p] "Mosby's Rangers battalion ws formed in June, 1863, with five companies, later increased to eight. The unit served behing Federal lines in Northern Virginia and was the most effective command of its kind. The enemy forces were neer safe and the area became known as 'MOSBY CONFEDERACY" In 1865 the unit ws still, stroing with over 600 effectives, but after General Lee surrendered, Mosby assembled his men at Salem on April 21, and the command disbanded."[/p][p] I cannot find any other explanation for any other 43rd Battallion this could have been issued too. The gun comes with complete set of records for actions of the 43rd Cavalry with letters from Mosby, J.E. Stuart, and R.E. Lee. If anyone has different information about this marking, I would like to hear.
